PotPlayer is a Windows media player whose official page credits copyright to Kakao Corp. The pages we read do not print a current version number, a release date, a price or licence terms, so this page does not give them. The changelog on Kakao's Daum site explains why: it states that the current date is used as the version number, and the newest entry could not be identified in the text we could read.
The one thing the main page does state is the platform list. PotPlayer lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7, with 32-bit (x86), 64-bit (x64) and arm64 installers.
What the PotPlayer page lists
| Area | Statement on the page |
|---|---|
| Hardware acceleration | DXVA, CUDA and QuickSync |
| 3D playback | Several glasses types and output formats |
| Subtitles | SMI, SRT, Vobsub, Blu-ray and ASS/SSA |
| Codecs | Built-in support, with OpenCodec offered for adding more |
| Playback tools | Snapshots, bookmarks, dual sound card selection |
| Rendering | Direct3D9 Ex Flip Mode and Overlay support |
Scope: potplayer.tv, read 23 Oct 2026. The page gives no version, price or licence text. A list of features is the developer's description, not a test of how well each works.
Windows limits inside the changelog
The changelog notes that some features have their own Windows requirements, which is the more reliable guide for older systems than the platform list.
| Feature | Windows requirement stated in the changelog |
|---|---|
| Built-in D3D11 video renderer | Windows 8 or newer |
| Per-monitor DPI support | Windows 8.1 or newer |
| Capturing UWP windows | Windows 10 version 1803 or newer |
| Microsoft MFT HEVC decoder | Needs WDDM 2.0, which requires Windows 10 or newer |
Scope: PotPlayer changelog on potplayer.daum.net, read 23 Oct 2026. Only the first part of a long page was read, and the page prints no dates for individual entries in what we could see. Recent entries in the part read added bookmark and playlist abilities, a remembered main-menu frame size and a delay for section repeat.
On Windows 7 and 8.1, which the main page still lists, a player that uses the D3D11 renderer or the HEVC hardware decoder may need a different setting. The changelog does not say what PotPlayer does on those systems, so check the player's own options after installing.
What the pages leave open
Three facts are missing from every page we read: the price, the licence and the current version. A free-looking player still has terms, and a reader who plans to use it at work should read the licence in the installer. The version question has a simple fix: open About inside the player and note the number. We also could not confirm whether the installer carries offers for other software, since the pages make no statement either way.
How the changelog is organised
The Daum changelog page is long, about 106,000 characters when read, and it opens with feature descriptions followed by unlabelled bullet lists. It states that the current date is used as the version number, which means a PotPlayer version looks like a date. That is useful once you open About in the player, because the date tells you how old your copy is, but it also means this page cannot name a current version from a changelog it could not date.
Reading the platform list
The main page lists Windows 7 through 11 together, while the changelog ties several features to newer Windows. A reader on Windows 7 should therefore expect the player to start but should not assume every feature on the list is available. The page gives no test of this, so the practical check is to install it and open the options for the renderer and decoder you want.
Before you install: a short check
- Choose the build for your processor: x64 for most PCs, arm64 for Windows on Arm, x86 only for old 32-bit systems.
- Download from the developer's pages, and compare the file's digital signature in its Properties if you are unsure of a copy.
- Read each installer screen and decline anything you did not ask for.
- If a video does not play, the page mentions OpenCodec for adding codecs, and the page does not describe how it works, so read its prompts before accepting.
Video players side by side
| Player | Windows floor stated | Licence stated | Where the build comes from |

| VLC | Windows XP SP3 to 11 | Open source (various) | Official installer, MSI, ZIP, 7z from VideoLAN |
| MPC-HC | Windows 7 to 11 | GPL v3 | GitHub releases |
| mpv | Not stated | Not named on the home page; libmpv builds GPLv3 or LGPLv3 | Third-party builds, plus project CI builds for testing |
| PotPlayer | Windows 7 to 11 | Not stated | Developer's page; x86, x64, arm64 installers |
Scope: each player's own pages on this site, read 23 Oct 2026. "Not stated" means the pages we read give no statement.
Alternatives in this directory
VLC media player is open source and runs on Windows XP SP3 through Windows 11 according to VideoLAN. MPC-HC is another Windows-only player, and mpv is a minimal player controlled mostly by keyboard and config files. K-Lite Codec Pack adds codecs for players that rely on DirectShow.
