foobar2000's download page lists version 2.26.1 as the latest stable release, and a 2.26.2 preview dated 23 October 2026. The home page news item announces version 2.26 for Windows and macOS, dated 1 October 2026, and calls the program "an advanced freeware audio player" with "no strings attached, no telemetry, no data collection." The changelog dates 2.26.1 to 9 October 2026, so the home page news is simply older than the download page, and this page treats 2.26.1 as the current stable version.
The home page says versions for iOS and tvOS and for Android are "to be released soon." The download page states Windows 7 or newer, on a computer no more than about 20 years old, with 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM (ARM64EC) builds for the stable version.
Recent versions
| Version | Date | Days since the previous | Notable changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.26.1 | 9 Oct 2026 | 8 | Restored automatic crash report submissions, which a regression had broken; fewer startup crashes caused by certain problematic components; fixed album art viewer repaint glitches in the Default UI when Direct2D is not enabled |
| 2.26 | 1 Oct 2026 | 0 | Release announced for Windows and macOS |
| 2.25.11 | 1 Oct 2026 | 97 | Released the same day as 2.26 |
| 2.25.10 | 26 Jun 2026 | 28 | Not summarised here |
| 2.25.9 | 29 May 2026 | Not computed | Not summarised here |
Computed from the dates above. The gap of 97 days between 2.25.10 and the pair of releases on 1 October is the long one. The newest version was 14 days old on the check date of 23 Oct 2026.
One line in 2.26.1 deserves a note. The home page promises no telemetry and no data collection, and the changelog says the release restored automatic crash report submissions. The two statements are not obviously in conflict, since a crash report is a different feature from usage telemetry, but the pages we read do not say what a crash report contains or whether it is sent only with your consent. Check the setting in Preferences if that matters to you.
What the pages say and do not say
| Question | Answer from the pages |
|---|---|
| Price | Described as freeware |
| Telemetry | The home page says none and no data collection |
| Windows requirements | Windows 7 or newer, per the download page |
| Mobile versions | iOS, tvOS and Android versions are announced but not yet released |
| Licence | Released under the foobar2000 license, which was not read |
Scope: foobar2000.org and its changelog, read 23 Oct 2026. Freeware is a statement about price, so the terms for redistribution and use at work would be in the licence, which was not read.
Downloads and components
The download page offers the stable 2.26.1 in 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM (ARM64EC) builds, and a 2.26.2 preview dated 23 October 2026 in 32-bit and 64-bit. It says foobar2000 requires Windows 7 or newer on a computer no more than about 20 years old, links a separate page for legacy hardware, and says the program is released under the foobar2000 license. The page also lists official components, a free Encoder Pack for the Converter component, and older versions.
Components are the way foobar2000 grows. The Components Repository lists add-ons such as decoders, DSP effects, visualisations, output options and tagging tools, filtered by tags and by system (Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, Windows ARM and macOS). Counting its rows gives roughly 155 entries, which is our count and not a figure the page states. Each entry shows a version, a last-update date and a short description, and the page sends installation questions to a guide on the Hydrogenaudio wiki. The page gives no notes on which components suit version 2.x, so check a component's own date before installing it.
Before you install: a short check
- Download from foobar2000.org, since the name is widely copied.
- Expect a plain interface. The changelog mentions a Default UI, and the home page does not describe it, so look at it after the first run.
- Set your crash report preference if you care. 2.26.1 restored automatic submissions.
- Check the download page's Windows 7 or newer floor against your system, and pick 32-bit, 64-bit or ARM to match.

MusicBee and AIMP are the other audio-first players here, both free. VLC media player plays music as well as video if you want one program for both, and mpv plays audio files too, though it is built around video. If your music is stored in archives, 7-Zip can unpack them.
