The current K-Lite Codec Pack is version 20.1.0, dated 18 October 2026, according to the Codec Guide site. The pack is a free software bundle of codecs and related tools for Windows. Codec Guide's title for it lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7. The download page adds that older versions of the pack also support XP and Vista.
A codec pack does not play video on its own. It adds decoders that DirectShow-based players can use, and the page says the Basic variant ships no player at all. Windows Media Player on modern Windows does not use DirectShow, according to the Codec Guide, so it needs Media Foundation codecs instead.
Release history
| Version | Date | Days since the previous |
|---|---|---|
| 20.1.0 | 18 Oct 2026 | 10 |
| 20.0.5 | 8 Oct 2026 | 21 |
| 20.0.0 | 17 Sep 2026 | 26 |
| 19.9.5 | 22 Aug 2026 | Not computed |
Computed from the four dates above: gaps of 26, 21 and 10 days, an average of 19 days. The newest version was 5 days old on the check date of 23 Oct 2026.
A new version every two to four weeks fits a pack that has to track the codecs inside it. The page does not say what changed in each version.
The four variants
| Variant | What the download page says it includes |
|---|---|
| Basic | A small set of essential DirectShow filters; no player; meant for use with an existing DirectShow player |
| Standard | Common audio and video formats, HDR playback, subtitles, hardware decoding and audio bitstreaming; includes MPC-HC, which the page recommends; installer components can be disabled |
| Full | Everything in Standard, plus madVR (a high-quality video renderer) and a plugin for H.264 MVC 3D video |
| Mega | Everything in Full, plus some ACM/VFW codecs used mainly by editing apps, Bass Audio Source, MPC Image Source, GraphStudioNext and two ffdshow processors |
Scope: codecguide.com/download_kl.htm, read 23 Oct 2026. The page lists no file sizes or per-variant dates. Standard, Full and Mega include both 32-bit and 64-bit codecs. The Update package is not standalone and needs one of the four installed first. Beta builds exist for each variant.
Three details from that table help you choose. The 3D plugin in Full needs MPC-HC with madVR and a compatible graphics driver, and the page says recent NVIDIA drivers no longer support 3D video. The two ffdshow processors in Mega are not used by default and the page says they are not needed or recommended. The page also states the pack does not extend the import abilities of Adobe Premiere or Vegas, which answers a common reason people install Mega.
When a codec pack is the wrong tool
A player such as VLC or mpv brings its own decoders and needs no pack. A pack helps when you use a DirectShow player, or when another program on the PC calls DirectShow filters. If your problem is one file that will not play, trying a self-contained player first is the quick test.
Which variant for which need
| If you... | The page points to |
|---|---|
| already use a DirectShow player and want only the filters | Basic |
| want a player included and common formats, subtitles, HDR and hardware decoding | Standard, which includes MPC-HC |
| want madVR as the video renderer, or H.264 MVC 3D playback | Full; the 3D plugin needs MPC-HC with madVR and a compatible graphics driver |
| use editing software that looks for ACM or VFW codecs | Mega includes some of these, mainly used by editing apps, but the page says it does not extend import abilities of Adobe Premiere or Vegas |
| use modern Windows Media Player | Not covered by DirectShow filters: the page says it needs Media Foundation codecs |
Scope: codecguide.com/download_kl.htm, read 23 Oct 2026. The table reorders the page's own statements by need.
The 32-bit and 64-bit split matters because a 64-bit player uses 64-bit codecs and a 32-bit player uses 32-bit ones. The page says Standard, Full and Mega include both, so a mixed setup works without extra downloads. The Basic page does not make the same statement in the text we read.
Check what you already have
Before installing a pack, look at what your player reports. If a file plays in VLC but not in your DirectShow player, a pack may help. If it fails everywhere, the file may be damaged, which no pack fixes.
Before you install: a short check
- Pick Standard if you want the pack with MPC-HC. Pick Basic only if you already have a DirectShow player and want the filters alone.
- Run the installer in its advanced mode if offered, and untick components you do not need, since the page says installer components can be disabled.
- Remember the Update package needs an existing install of one of the four variants.
- Check what your editing software needs. Codec Guide says Mega does not add import abilities to Adobe Premiere or Vegas.
Alternatives in this directory
MPC-HC is the player bundled with the Standard variant. PotPlayer includes its own codec support, according to its page. VLC media player and mpv play most files without a pack.
