The current stable WinDirStat is version 2.8.0, released on 2 August 2026, according to the project's GitHub releases page. As of 23 October 2026 that page also listed a beta, 2.8.1 Beta, dated 16 August. WinDirStat is a free disk usage analyzer for Windows, licensed under the GNU GPL version 3 or later, and the project describes it as a disk usage analyzer and cleanup assistant.
It scans drives and folders and shows the result as a treemap, with sunburst and flame graph views added in 2.8.0. Version 2.x was developed for and tested on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11, and on Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2025, according to the project's page. Other versions may work but are not supported.
Which download to pick
| Download | Size (2.8.0) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MSI installer, x64 | 2.82 MB | The project recommends the 64-bit MSI for most users |
| MSI installer, x86 | 2.62 MB | For 32-bit Windows |
| MSI installer, ARM64 | 2.76 MB | For Windows on Arm |
| Portable ZIP | 5.42 MB | No install |
| Portable 7z | 3.93 MB | Smaller archive of the same kind |
| MSIX bundle | Not listed here | Listed with the release assets |
| Microsoft Store, winget, Chocolatey, Scoop | Not applicable | Package-manager routes the download page lists |
Scope: WinDirStat download page and GitHub releases page, read 23 Oct 2026. The release also carries WinDirStat-Hashes.txt with SHA-256 checksums.
The command the project gives for winget is winget install -e --id WinDirStat.WinDirStat. The project also warns that unofficial sites copy its name and offer outdated or modified files, some of which may be malicious, so the two places to download from are windirstat.net and the project's GitHub page.
Release history and cadence
| Version | Date | Type | Main changes (from the changelog) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.8.1 Beta | 16 Aug 2026 | Pre-release | Changes not summarised on the releases page |
| 2.8.0 | 2 Aug 2026 | Stable | Flame graph and sunburst views, Hilbert and Moore treemap layouts, per-user Explorer menu registration, configurable CPU and I/O priority, confirmation prompts for potentially destructive actions |
| 2.7.2 Beta | 22 Jul 2026 | Pre-release | Changes not summarised on the releases page |
| 2.7.0 | 1 Jul 2026 | Stable | Storage analytics, permissions scanning, empty-folder removal tool, XXH3 hash option |
| 2.6.2 | 1 Jun 2026 | Stable | Hardening against DLL sideloading and other fixes |
Computed from the stable dates above: 30 days from 2.6.2 to 2.7.0 and 32 days from 2.7.0 to 2.8.0, an average of 31 days. From 2.8.0 on 2 August to the check date of 23 October is 82 days with no newer stable release on the page, and the 16 August beta is 68 days old. The page may have changed since it was read.
The 31-day gap between the stable releases is a fact about the past three months. It does not say what will happen next, and an 82-day wait since the last stable release is longer than either of the earlier gaps. The beta suggests work continued after 2.8.0.
What the project says it can do
- Show disk usage as a treemap, sunburst or flame graph.
- Find duplicates with hashes. A sparse mode labels sampled matches as "Probable duplicates".
- Inspect permissions, and estimate storage-tier costs.
- Save or load scans as CSV or JSON, with command-line options.
- Recover deleted files on NTFS, exFAT and FAT drives with administrator access.
- Run cleanup actions from within the program.
Version 2.0.1, the oldest entry in the changelog, introduced native 64-bit and ARM builds and the MSI installer. The changelog does not cover 2.0.0 or earlier, so this page says nothing about how the project began.
What Windows already does
Windows 10 and 11 have Storage settings and Storage Sense. Microsoft's page says Storage Sense works on the system drive only, usually C:, and that other drives are handled under "Storage used on other drives". A treemap tool like this one is for the question Storage Sense does not answer: which folder on any drive holds the large files. Deleting is still up to you, and deleting from a scanner view follows the same rules as deleting in Explorer, so check what a folder is before removing it.
Alternatives in this directory
WizTree is the closest match, and its documentation says fast scanning needs administrator rights. For general cleaning, CCleaner and BleachBit delete files by cleaning rules and do not draw a map of the drive. Large folders of old files are also candidates for archiving, and 7-Zip is a free archiver that does that.
Questions the download page answers
Which file for Windows on Arm? The ARM64 MSI, 2.76 MB in the 2.8.0 release.
Can I check the download? The release includes a WinDirStat-Hashes.txt file with SHA-256 checksums for the assets.
Which servers does it support? Version 2.x was developed and tested on Windows Server 2008 R2 through 2025, along with Windows 7 to 11.
Who owns the code? The project lists the copyright as held by the WinDirStat Team, and the licence is GPL 3 or later, so source code is public on GitHub.
Can it be scripted? The project mentions command-line options and CSV or JSON export of scans, which allow reports to be produced without the interface.
