Opera GX is Opera's gaming-oriented browser. Its page lists a Windows download plus Android and iOS apps, and gives no price and no Windows requirement. The page names GX Control, which it describes as a way to "rein in your system resources", without giving figures for what it limits. Opera's file server lists 137.0.6036.65 dated 15 October 2026 as the highest GX version at the time of reading, and that listing is not an announcement, so check the version shown inside the browser.

Computed from the six dates above: gaps of 5, 3, 4, 13 and 3 days between the listed GX builds, six builds in 28 days. The newest listed was 8 days old on the check date of 23 Oct 2026, a little behind the regular Opera listing, whose newest build was dated 20 October.

The GX build numbers trail Opera One's by one major version in this listing. That fits a sibling product that is updated from a shared base, though the pages read do not state the relationship, so this page leaves it as an observation.

What to weigh

GX bundles a lot of services: a sidebar full of social and chat links, a shopping feature called Cashback, and a games corner. That is a feature set, and the page gives no statement about data collection, so the privacy policy is where to check what those services send. The gaming reputation does not change what the page itself says, which is that the controls exist and the limits are not described.

The VPN and ad blocker behind the GX label

The GX page lists a free VPN, a VPN Pro tier and an ad blocker. Opera's separate pages for those features are written for the Opera browser in general, and they are the nearest official detail available, so the points below come from them and may differ in the GX edition.

  • The free VPN is described as uncapped, with three server locations (Ashburn, Amsterdam, Singapore), and it covers only activity inside the browser. System-wide protection is a VPN Pro feature.
  • The ad blocker is built in and is switched on from the shield icon beside the address bar. Opera claims content-rich pages can load up to 90% faster, and gives no test conditions.
  • Opera says its business is supported by search partnerships, browser features and paid subscriptions such as VPN Pro.

GX Control has its own page on Opera's site that could not be loaded, so the figures for its limits are not given here. The GX page itself says only that you can rein in your system resources.

Why the sidebar list is long

The sidebar section of the GX page names more than ten services. Each one is an integration, such as Twitch, Discord or Telegram, and the page does not say whether they load when the browser starts or only when you open them. If you care about memory use, open the browser's own task manager after enabling the services you want and watch what actually runs, since the page's resource-control claim is not backed by numbers.

Before you install: a short check

  • The GX page states no Windows minimum and no price, so confirm both with Opera if either matters to you.
  • Pick the sidebar services you want and turn the rest off, since the page lists more than ten of them.
  • Read the page's statement about GX Control as what it is: a control for system resources, with no figures given on the page we could read.
  • Check the version inside the browser after installing. The listing on Opera's server showed 137.0.6036.65 on 15 October, and newer builds may exist.

Alternatives in this directory

Opera is the standard edition from the same company. Brave, Vivaldi and Google Chrome are other Chromium-based choices, while Mozilla Firefox uses a different engine. Mods and themes pile up files over time, and a cleaner such as BleachBit or Wise Disk Cleaner can clear browser caches.
