The current Microsoft Edge Stable release is 156.0.4314.42, dated 22 October 2026, according to Microsoft's release notes for the Stable channel. Edge is built on Chromium, the same open-source code that underlies Google Chrome, and its main versions follow Chromium's numbering. Microsoft's Edge page lists no price.
Microsoft's own support list covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 in several editions, and it states that support for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and the matching server versions ended with Edge version 109 on 12 January 2023.

Release history and cadence
| Version | Date | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 156.0.4314.42 | 22 Oct 2026 | Main release |
| 155.0.4283.62 | 16 Oct 2026 | Update 2 |
| 155.0.4283.60 | 15 Oct 2026 | Update 1 |
| 155.0.4283.45 | 8 Oct 2026 | Main release |
Computed from the dates above: 14 days between the two main releases, with two updates in the days after the first. The newest version was 1 day old on the check date of 23 Oct 2026.
The notes page lists the type of each release, which is what makes the pattern readable: a main release, then fixes within about a week. A browser that updates this often changes under you, so a version number printed on any website, including this one, is a snapshot.
What Microsoft says Edge includes
| Feature | What the Edge page states |
|---|---|
| Copilot | Works across your tabs to compare options and help complete tasks, and uses browsing history to personalise help over time |
| Energy saver | Claims an average of 25 more minutes of battery life, varying by settings and usage |
| Startup boost and Sleeping tabs | Listed as performance modes |
| Sync | Passwords, favorites and settings across devices |
Scope: Microsoft's Edge product page, read 23 Oct 2026. The page says feature availability may vary by device type, market and browser version. It makes no statement about tracking prevention, extensions or importing data, so this page makes none either.
What changed in the last four releases
Microsoft's release notes name the changes in each entry. They read like a change log for managed PCs as much as for home users, since several lines mention enterprise policies.
| Version | Feature and fix lines in the notes |
|---|---|
| 156.0.4314.42 (22 Oct) | Improved site permissions interfaces, enhanced Autofill, enhanced key icon with credential details, copy actions and notes, an autolaunch opt-in for managed devices, and deprecation of the NewPDFReaderEnabled enterprise policy; fixed a launch failure for some users with existing profiles after a scheduled update restart from the Edge management service; new policy RemixAvailability |
| 155.0.4283.62 (16 Oct) | Fixed various bugs and performance issues |
| 155.0.4283.60 (15 Oct) | Sleeping tabs timer default changed; Security Update Alerts in the Edge management service; fixed various bugs and performance issues |
| 155.0.4283.45 (8 Oct) | Tab organisation enhancements, retirement of real-time video translation, an update to a local network access policy; fixed an issue that made search engines set by recommended default search provider policies become invalid after a short time |
Scope: Microsoft Learn, Stable channel release notes, read 23 Oct 2026. Each entry links to a list of security updates, and the page does not show a count of fixed vulnerabilities.
One line affects everyday users: Microsoft changed the default timer for sleeping tabs in the 15 October update. The notes do not give the old or new value, so check Edge's performance settings to see what your copy uses. Edge's product page lists Sleeping tabs among its performance modes next to Energy saver and Startup boost.
Before you install: a short check
- Check your Windows edition against Microsoft's list. Windows 10 SAC 1709 and later and Windows 11 are on it, and Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are not.
- If you are on a Windows 10 release that Microsoft has stopped supporting, Edge still receives updates for now, and Microsoft calls that a temporary bridge and recommends upgrading.
- Look at your performance settings. Energy saver, Startup boost and Sleeping tabs are the modes Microsoft names, and the average battery claim of 25 more minutes depends on your settings and usage.
- Decide on Copilot and sync. Microsoft says Copilot uses browsing history to personalise its help over time.

Google Chrome runs on the same Chromium base and its support list starts at Windows 10 for Intel processors. Brave and Vivaldi are Chromium-based as well, and Mozilla Firefox is the main option with a different engine. For housekeeping on a Windows PC, Microsoft PC Manager is Microsoft's other free app.
